Mt Beauty Gliding Club - 40 years of Operation
The Chairman of Mt Beauty Community Bank, Andrew Randell, congratulates Mt Beauty Gliding Club President, Andrew Evans on the Club achieving forty years of operation
The Mt Beauty Gliding Club recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding. The Club was founded in 1976 by Mt Beauty residents, Manfred Rueff and Ray Addinsall and has grown to a membership level of around 60 members. The Club is very active and operates mid week and at week ends. It has trained many local people to fly gliders including a number of juniors who are allowed to fly gliders solo after their 15th birthday. Club pilots often fly their gliders for five hours or more covering distances of up to 500 km or more. The Club is currently 15th in the world on the international gliding On Line Contest.
The Club attracts glider pilots from around Australia to fly in the magnificent mountain scenery around Mt Beauty. The Club recently hosted the annual Women in Gliding meeting which saw 17 women glider pilots from around Australia and their partners enjoy one week’s gliding flying and training flights at Mt Beauty. It also hosts the annual Mountain Gliding week in February each year again attracting glider pilots from around Australia.
Mt Beauty Club President Andrew Evans said that the Club has gone from strength to strength and looks forward to a long period of serving the residents of the Mt Beauty and Upper Kiewa Valley. He acknowledged the great assistance provided by the Mt Beauty Community Bank in helping the Club purchase essential safety equipment, and provide funds to promote the Club’s Junior flying training program.
